Picture Controls

As you may have seen in my Matching Color write-up, I have been playing with Picture Controls both in my D90 and in ViewNX. I am particularly impressed with what can be done with these controls and the power they hold to affect the way photos and videos look both in-camera and through post processing. I will continue to update this page as I learn more, but for now, please enjoy this video I put together to demonstrate the effect of Picture Controls on video capture with the Nikon D90.

Editing in Picture Control Utility

You can create and modify your own controls in Picture Control Utility. The following screen shots show the settings for some of my favorite controls. Click on any of the thumbnails to get the full size screen shot.

My custom Picture Controls

D2XMODE emulation Picture controls: After some tinkering, I've created 5 Picture controls based on the Portrait Picture control. The first one, PORTD2XM1 emulates the D2XMODE1 control. PORTD2XM1c is the same as the first, but with contrast thrown in. PORTD2XM1h is the same as the first, but with highlight protection through a custom curve adjustment. Next, PORTD2XM1s, is the same as the first, but adding a bit of saturation. Finally, PORTD2XM1v pumps up saturation some more for that "vivid" look. You can dowload these in this ZIP file. To load on your camera, or to import into Picture Control Utility (which you can use to make your own controls), copy to your SD or Compact flash card, into a directory called NIKON\CUSTOMPC. You may have to create NIKON under your card's root directory and CUSTOMPC as its sub-folder. Good luck!

Micro-contrast (Local contrast) Picture Control [Update 03-24-2010]: This PC contains a tone curve I described in my blog that enhances contrast in shadow, bright midtones and highlight areas. You can get it here.

Jake Khuon's film Picture Controls

I can't finish this topic without thanking
Jake Khuon for sharing his film emulation Picture Controls. Though the film look is more than just about color, darkness and contrast, including things like grain and light response under different conditions, his controls are a lot of fun to use and lend a different look I find very interesting. Jake has made these controls avaiable for download these from his Website. Please take time to check them out and thank Jake for his contribution.
